Database Planning for 2010

The Reference Services Committee is very committed to refining and improving the premium content choices for our customers in 2010.  We will be creating surveys for our staff and customers regarding these electronic resources.  In the meantime, please use this post to comment on your favorites, potential drops, subject gaps, print reference gaps that could be filled with electronic resources, etc.  Here are some questions to get you thinking:

  • Do we need both AllData Online and Auto Repair Reference Center (EBSCO)?
  • What have you been missing from your print reference collection?
  • Are we prepared to pick up electronic subscriptions for what will no longer be available in print (ie: ValueLine)?

Please post your comments and ask more questions!  Thank you!

  1. If it comes down to a choice between AllData and Auto Repair Reference Center, I vote to keep ARRC. The ability to access this database from home is invaluable for our patrons, especially now that we have fewer and fewer print auto repair manuals. I refer many people to ARRC, and they are always very happy!

I like both All Data and ARRC. If I cannot find information in one, I can most likely find it in the other. But if I had to choose one, I’d choose ARRC due to the home accessibility and information on models older than 1982.

I agree w/ Anne that the ability to access a database from home is very important, especially when someone is working on their vehicle!

I agree with the other posts so far: if we need to choose, keep ARRC. I’ve had much more luck finding the diagrams needed by patrons in ARRC, plus it’s available remotely.
