The Reference Services Committee has been evaluating the use of NADA guides for the past several years. Last year several community libraries took the bold step and asked us to drop their NADA subscriptions. And we’re encouraged by what we’ve learned. When our customers come into the libraries and ask for a auto price guide, we have handed them the NADA book. The libraries who don’t have the price guide in print work with the customer and create a more customized search using the online tools. The customers are very pleased with this service, which is also how we handle that type of question in the Ask a Librarian world. As we have learned from our customer and non-customer surveys, that interaction means a lot!
Therefore, effective January 1, 2011, we will no longer subscribe to any NADA guide for any community library. There are so many excellent online resources that are available to consumers at no charge. The Kelly Blue Book and NADA links are on our Automotive subject guide in the Databases and Research area of our website. We will be adding Edmunds to this list in the near future.
