A reference question in disguise?

When you’re verifying a RINC, do you ever see the phrase “or anything else by this author?”  That’s a signal it might not be just a request for that item, but a request for information.   The customer might need some assistance and you can provide that assistance through a reference interview.

Please don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and call the customer to probe for more information or to clarify the question.  It’s possible that the customer really does want the item that he/she requested, but anytime that we can meet the customer’s need with our existing collection is great!

If you do contact the customer and the RINC will still be sent through, please make a note on the RINC about what you did so that the selectors know that contact has been made.
