ProQuest Platform Enhancements

Earlier this month, during a scheduled downtime, ProQuest added the following functionality/enhancements to their interface based on customer input:

Open URL linking
We have successfully completed all items supporting the new platform’s linking functionality with multiple vendors, a matter that was often cited as being of critical importance to a wide variety of our customers.

Scholarly Journals limit
Default limits for all search pages are now ‘Full Text’ and ‘Peer Reviewed’ which replaces ‘Scholarly Journals’ on the search screens, including the basic search. This allows users to quickly access robust results from the onset. And, administrators can determine which combination of limits appear on the search screens via the ProQuest Administrator Module.

PDF enhancements
We have improved functionality by increasing the reading area, reducing the occurrences of scrollbars, and making it easier for users to utilize their preferred PDF readers.

Modern Languages Association (MLA) International Bibliography – now available
The MLA International Bibliography (Illumina platform version) has launched on the new platform and is user-ready for the majority of our customers as it successfully delivers proper search results and relevancy rankings. Additional 2011 work will provide further enhancements to support highly advanced users and their complex search queries. Scheduled work includes:

  • Some data in Authors Work look up lists
  • Formatting of editor roles in book chapter records
  • Some entries in subject headings (all)
  • Lateral searching on results terms which include diacritics
  • Data clean up in Country field of publication look up in the Directory of Periodicals
  • Annual publications in full record view are listed as appearing as published in January; scholars should be sure to check formatting of citation dates in publications appearing manually

Improvements with auto-complete
This is another area where your input has led us to make extensive improvements. When entering words in the search box, only words/phrases that have been spelled correctly appear as auto-complete suggestions. This is especially important to users who are conducting research in languages other than English or users with writing/reading difficulties.

Overall improved platform performance
We addressed a range of issues that impacted research using such products as ProQuest Historical Newspapers, MLA International Bibliography, ABI/INFORM and ERIC with substantial improvements overall.
