Tweaks and Changes to Research Page

The Reference Services Committee has made some changes to the Research page:

Research redoWhat’s new?

  • We’ve added 2 levels of Homework–one for kids, one for teens
  • We changed Business to Business & Finance
  • We changed Healthy Living to Health & Science
  • We changed Legal Info to Legal
  • We changed Your Money to Consumer
  • We moved the Magazines & Newspapers from the green buttons on top to the category blocks below.

Hope that you like the changes–big thanks to Mike Longley for getting them done so quickly!

New Images in Science Reference Center

From EBSCO:

Science Reference Center™ now features an additional 250,000 high-quality images, including stunning pictures of landscapes, plants, animals, rock formations, fungi and more from Nature Picture Library. Based in the U.K., Nature Picture Library provides photographs from more than 300 of the world’s best nature and wildlife photographers.

These images have been selected for inclusion in Science Image Collection, a database that accompanies Science Reference Center. The addition of Nature Picture Library brings the total number of images in Science Image Collection to more than 280,000. The collection also includes images from National Geographic, UPI, Getty and NASA as well as hundreds of proprietary illustrations, charts and graphs.

Building Codes

At yesterday’s Reference Services Committee meeting we received a request for a 2012 Uniform Plumbing Code.  We were initially concerned that we’d be purchasing something in May and weeding it months later.  But in looking at the SBCC (State Building Code Council), we learned that new editions of codes are most often adopted the year after the new code is published.  So while there are now 2015 plumbing, mechanical, building, and fire codes in print, they have not been adopted.  We will purchase the 2015 copies in early 2016 in expectation of their adoption in July, 2016.

Changes to RINC Article Request Form

At Joe Munson’s suggestion, the following changes have been made:

First, on the submission form filled out by the patron, the “Date Published” field has been changed to “Issue Date” and the “Issue” field has been  changed to “Issue Number” and  comes immediately after the “Volume” field instead of before it.

Second, on the form viewed by staff, the “Publication Date” field has been changed to “Issue Date” and the “Issue” field has been changed to “Issue Number”.

Updated Intranet Pages

A huge thank you to Roxanne Fuentes and Karen Marshall for their overhaul of our Virtual Reference Intranet pages.  Instead of pages and pages of text, Roxanne has created PDFs that are more user-friendly.  And Karen’s fine hand with directions and language make it easier to understand the process.  Kudos to both of them!
