Small Business eResource Trials – June 2012

For our 2nd quarter 2012, the Reference Services Committee (RSC) decided to take a look at the resources that we have available for our small  business customers.  We have some new products to trial and some products that we currently subscribe to worth evaluating against their competitors or upgrades.

RSC and Lynnwood Library staff (business subject specialists) will take a first look at the resources.  Any trial products that might fit our collection will then be opened up to library staff on Friday, June 15th.  A survey will be sent to gather product feedback on Monday, June 25th.

We currently subscribe to:

  • ABI/INFORM Trade & Industry (ProQuest)
  • AtoZdatabases
  • Business Source Premier (EBSCO)

We will be trialing:

  • DemographicsNow: Business & People (Gale)
  • Business Source Complete (EBSCO upgrade)
  • SimplyMaps
  • Small Business Reference Center (EBSCO)
  • Small Business Resource Center (Gale)

We will also have a preview of the new in 2013 interface for Gale’s business products through Business Insights: Global.

Any questions?  Please contact Roxanna Garrison, x3021 or Christa Werle, x7160.

AtoZ Databases Trial September 2011

Considering an alternative/competitor to Reference USA, we have a trial of A to Z Databases for the month of September.  Please test it out as you would use Reference USA and reply with your feedback by 9/30/11.

Looking forward to hearing what you think!

DIY Trials

Though we had trials for Do It Yourself products scheduled later in the year, we are going ahead with trials now.  There is a limited number of products available and by trialling them now, we can evaluate access sooner and work to fill remaining gaps with our eBook collections.

So, please visit this EBSCO trial site over the next 30 days and take a look at Hobbies & Crafts Reference Center and the Home Improvement Reference Center.  Post your comments and feedback here on the blog.  These trials will expire on 4/20/11 and then be evaluated by the Reference Services Committee.

March Online Resource Trials – Science

During the month of March 2011, Sno-Isle Libraries is trialing online resources in the subject area of Science.  The Reference Services Committee has identified this subject area as one that needs developing to reach our distinct user groups identified by our MOSEs.  The trial and access information follows…

Facts on File:

Science Online contains extensive information on a broad range of scientific disciplines. The content is organized by subject area and type of resource, as well as by the National Science Education Standards. Fact Sheet

Today’s Science has authoritative yet accessible information on the latest developments in science. Today’s Science bridges the gap between textbooks and what’s happening in science now.  Fact Sheet

Science eLearning Modules are subsets of other online resources designed specifically for online learners.

Gale:

Science in Context has an interface similar to our other In Context resources. Supporting high school curricula and university coursework, Science in Context features authoritative information for assignments and projects, and provides detailed coverage of popular subjects from obesity to endangered species.  Fact Sheet

Marshall Cavendish Digital:

Aquatic World, Birds of the World, Elements, Exploring Earth & Space Science, Exploring Life Science, Exploring Mammals, Exploring Technology, Food & Nutrition, Growing Up with Science, Life Sciences, Reptiles & Amphibians, Wildlife & Plants of the World, Open for Debate ( includes science topics) are all digital reference works accessible during the trial period through our existing portal to other titles we already license.

Please spend some time in each product and report in the comments the following information:

  • Product Title (List Marshall Cavendish Digital titles separately as we can license them individually)
  • “Yay” or “Nay” opinion on Sno-Isle subscription
  • Your favorite “selling” points of the product

We appreciate all your work and feedback to help us provide our customers with the best online resources available!  Thank you!  Any questions?  Call Christa Werle at x7160.

Text-A-Librarian Trial is Over

A BIG thank you to Terry Beck and Dawn Rutherford who helped me answer the questions that came in via text during our free trial (6/1-9/30) of Mosio’s Text-A-Librarian service!  The trial is now over and we will not be adding this service at this time.  We are looking forward to evaluating text reference service again at the end of 2011 and will be watching both demand and staffing options until then.

As always, if you have any questions about this or any of our online reference services, please feel free to ask me (x7160)!

Legal Product Trials – October 2010

Our final area of consideration for electronic resources this year is Legal Information.  The Reference Services Committee (RSC) has selected two products for trial during the month of October.  Please participate and comment here or contact your  RSC representative with your feedback.  The trials run through 10/28/10.  Shortly following this date, we will send out a survey to all librarians asking for your feedback.

Career Product Comparisons

The Reference Services Committee needs to make a decision regarding which ONE career electronic resource we will subscribe to in 2010.  Our choices are:
